Diet for Marathon Runners – Carbohydrate – Marathon Training Programs. What is carbohydrate? Carbohydrate provides the most readily available superior source of fuel or . The brain relies on blood glucose to function properly. Muscles use stored glycogen as their primary energy source with blood glucose as an additional source. When muscle glycogen becomes low, fatigue occurs in the muscles being used. Muscle glycogen depletion occurs after 2- 3 hours of continuous training at low intensity. The glycaemic index (GI) ranks carbohydrate foods according to how quickly they release glucose into the bloodstream. Foods are ranked on a scale of 0- 1. Glucose has a ranking or 1. Dried peas and beans release glucose into the blood slowly and have a low glycaemic index ranking. Other foods fall in between these extremes. The glycaemic index can be used to help athletes choose foods that will be of most benefit at specific times of their training and performance: Foods with a glycaemic index ranking of 7. GI foods. They increase blood glucose levels quickly, providing a fast source of blood glucose for muscles to take up and use. These foods are good to eat during and after exercise. Intermediate glycaemic index foods have a ranking or 5. These foods are also good during and after exercise. Low glycaemic index foods are ranked 0- 5. These foods should be included in main meals in the marathon training diet and may be useful before exercise. Examples of foods that have a low, intermediate or high glycaemic index. Runners World magazine writer, answers running questions and provides training programs. Hal Higdon has been writing and running for half a century. Using the terms simple and complex carbohydrate is an old way of grouping carbohydrates according to their pre- digestion chemical structure. Examples of simple carbohydrate include fruit juice, dried fruit, sports drinks, milk, sugar, jam, honey, soft drinks and cordials. Examples of complex carbohydrate include pasta, rice, breads, breakfast cereals, and some fruits and vegetables. It was thought that due to their chemical structure simple sugars caused a rapid rise in blood glucose while complex carbohydrates caused a more gradual release of glucose into the blood. Recent research has shown that the rise in blood sugar after eating food can also be affected by the type of sugar or starch in the food, the processing or cooking of the food, fat and fibre content and ripeness of the food. It is more useful to rank carbohydrate foods according to the glycaemic index, which takes these factors into account. Why do you need carbohydrate? Carbohydrate is the superior energy source for marathon runners. Carbohydrate is stored in limited amounts in your muscles and liver. The amount of carbohydrate- containing foods you eat can influence the amount of glycogen stored in your body. If you start training with high amounts of glycogen stored in your muscles and liver you will be able to train harder and for longer. This applies whether doing intense training for a short time or lower intensity training for a longer time. Consuming carbohydrate during exercise will provide blood glucose as an energy source. Carbohydrate foods after exercise will maximize recovery and bring glycogen stores back to high levels for your next training session. You need carbohydrate to: Store optimal levels of muscle and liver glycogen before exercise, providing energy and delaying fatigue. Keep your blood glucose levels topped up during exercise to further delay fatigue. Replace used up muscle and liver glycogen after exercise so your body can recover faster. How much carbohydrate do you need? The results of scientific studies suggest that athletes should get 5. A diet high in carbohydrates will allow you to get more out of your marathon training and lead to better results on competition day. Timing when you eat. When you are training you go through a continual 2. Therefore your total daily intake of carbohydrate needs to be adequate. Blog > Training > Training To Walk A Marathon. Training To Walk A Marathon. Planning the timing of your meals will optimize your available fuel stores before and during exercise, and will improve your body. Planning when to eat usually involves being practical and using main meals and snacks around training to ensure you have enough to eat before and after training. Regular meals. Carbohydrates should be included in all meals and snacks during the day. When you are eating a high- carbohydrate diet, snacks are an easy way to eat additional carbohydrate. Before training. To maximize your glycogen stores it is important to eat at least 2. For example, if you are training at 1. A 2. 00g breakfast meal and morning snack could consist of 1 cup of cereal with trim milk and a medium banana (5. For a morning snack you could have a pottle of yoghurt (2. You need to be practical when planning your pre- training meals. For example if you are planning on a marathon training run at 6am you may not feel like eating much. Have a high carbohydrate meal the night before and aim for a minimum of 5. For example, you could have a smoothie or a banana and a glass of fruit juice. How much you eat will also depend upon how long the training session is going to be. If you are planning on a long training run make sure you have at least 2. If you are going for a half hour run you will be fine with a light snack. For example, a piece of fruit or a slice of toast. Training is a good chance to experiment with different foods at different times to determine what suits you. In the past athletes have worried about eating before exercise because it was thought that blood glucose went up and then came down lower than resting levels, reducing performance. Recent research has shown that this does not usually impair performance. In fact, eating before training or competition has a positive effect on performance. During training. When training for over an hour and a half you should plan to consume some fluids and carbohydrate. This may not always be practical when you are going for an hour- and- a- half training run. If you do not eat or drink during training you must pay special attention to you pre and post- exercise carbohydrate intake. When practicing your during- exercise carbohydrate intake for a competition situation upi should aim to consume 0. This is enough to maintain your blood glucose levels. Sports drinks and foods with a moderate to high glycaemic index will provide glucose quickly to blood for muscles and the brain to use as energy. After training. To cope with daily intensive marathon training you need to plan your recovery nutrition. After a marathon training session you muscle and liver glycogen stores are depleted. You need to replace these stores as quickly as possible so that you have energy for your next training session. This is especially important for marathon runners who have more than one training session each day. Glycogen stores will be replaced most efficiently if you have approximately 1 gram of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight within the first 3. This should be followed up with a high- carbohydrate meal and regular carbohydrate meals and snacks for the rest of the day. For example, a 7. A smoothie made with 4. She can follow this up with a high carbohydrate meal and snacks. You need to be able to plan your post marathon training carbohydrate so it is practical and fits in with your main meals and snacks. Although high glycaemic foods will supply glucose to the blood and muscles quickly, it is the total amount of carbohydrate that has the greatest effect on recovery.
Intercell to stop further development of Travelers' Diarrhea Vaccine Patch. Travelers' Diarrhea vaccine candidate failed to meet efficacy endpoints to protect against enterotoxigenic E. The pivotal studies confirm that the vaccine candidate induces reproducible levels of protective antibodies against the LT toxin resulting in a meaningful reduction of LT specific ETEC episodes, following transcutaneous immunization. The projected year end loss for 2. EUR 4. 0m since milestone payments in connection with the Travelers' Diarrhea program are not expected to be received, and the Company expects to impair all or a substantial part of its respective intangible assets. Intercell has taken the decision not to pursue further clinical development of its Travelers' Diarrhea vaccine candidate Intercell will reduce R& D expenses by approximately 4. Management is focusing the Company's R& D strategy and resources on the other projects in its well- balanced clinical stage portfolio, especially the successful and highly attractive nosocomial programs including the investigational vaccines against Pseudomonas and C. The decision was made following the receipt of results of its randomized and placebo- controlled Phase III study (ELT3. Europe to Mexico and Guatemala as well as the pilot efficacy Phase II trial (ELT2. Europe to India. Both trials were successfully conducted according to study design, met statistical targets of enrollment, participation follow- up, subject and site compliance, and produced a firm preliminary conclusion. The vaccine was generally well tolerated and the safety profile was consistent with that observed in earlier studies. Intercell AG - Quarterly Report Q3. Vaccine-related serious side-effects which.Intercell has killed development of its Travellers’ Diarrhoea Vaccine Patch after the product failed in clinical trials which will lead to job cuts and a dramatic. At Intercell, we have advanced two major platforms of TCI: 1) a needle-free vaccine delivery patch (VDP) and 2) a vaccine enhancement patch (VEP). In an earlier randomized double blind placebo- controlled Phase II field trial (ELT2. TD vaccine candidate showed excellent immunogenicity and reduced the risk of clinically significant diarrheal episodes in U. S. The Phase III trial was intended to confirm the efficacy of the investigational TD Vaccine Patch for prevention of moderate to severe diarrhea in a similar field setting. The trials' primary endpoints, reduction of incidence of all types of enterotoxigenic E. Thus, in the ELT3. ETEC and no apparent effect on the frequency of all- cause moderate to severe diarrhea was observed. However, a statistically significant reduction of duration of all- cause diarrheal episodes and total number of unformed stools was observed, confirming observations from a previous Phase II study. In study ELT3. 01, the vaccine protected most against LT positive ETEC (up to 6. However, the study was not powered to demonstrate a statistically significant efficacy against individual ETEC types. Furthermore the incidence of LT positive ETEC in both trials was lower than expected, compared to previous trials and published data. The current trials have confirmed the previous Phase II observation of a consistent induction of protective levels of antibodies against the LT- toxin following transcutaneous immunization and using the Company's proprietary delivery technology. This clearly supports and validates patch- based vaccination as a suitable route of immunization for future potential product candidates. Intercell is carrying out further analysis of the trial results. However, subject to this analysis and further consultation with its partner, the Company remains committed to expanding the development of the use of patch technology for existing or novel vaccines as well as the development of the investigational Vaccine Enhancement Patch (VEP) system for vaccination against Avian H5. N1 Influenza. Following the successful progression of the S. Hospital- acquired infections represent a major health need and Intercell is well positioned with its portfolio to help address this medical need. Intangible assets pertaining to the TD vaccine program and other patch programs represented a book value of EUR 1. September 3. 0, 2. Intercell expects to impair all or a substantial part of these assets following an impairment analysis triggered by the study results. Such impairment will have a substantial effect on the loss for the full year 2. In addition, Intercell does not expect to receive the previously expected milestone payments in connection with the TD program in 2. Intercell has decided to substantially reduce Research and Development expenses by approximately 4. The measures are expected to be fully effective by mid 2. This article was adapted by the author from the design chapter of. Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook. Sybex 1. 99. 4, by Ken Getz, Paul Litwin and Greg Reddick, and is. Don't let the fact that the examples were done for Access 2 fool. Many others attempt to learn it, but give up because of the dry, academic treatment it is usually given by most authors and teachers. But if creating databases is part of your job, then you're treading on thin ice if you don't have a good solid understanding of relational database design theory. This article begins with an introduction to relational database design theory, including a discussion of keys, relationships, integrity rules, and the often- dreaded . Codd in 1. 96. 9, then a researcher at IBM. The model is based on branches of mathematics called set theory and predicate logic. The basic idea behind the relational model is that a database consists of a series of unordered tables (or relations) that can be manipulated using non- procedural operations that return tables. This model was in vast contrast to the more traditional database theories of the time that were much more complicated, less flexible and dependent on the physical storage methods of the data. Note: It is commonly thought that the word relational in the relational model comes from the fact that you relate together tables in a relational database. Although this is a convenient way to think of the term, it's not accurate. Instead, the word relational has its roots in the terminology that Codd used to define the relational model. The table in Codd's writings was actually referred to as a relation (a related set of information). In fact, Codd (and other relational database theorists) use the terms relations, attributes and tuples where most of us use the more common terms tables, columns and rows, respectively (or the more physical—and thus less preferable for discussions of database design theory—files, fields and records). The relational model can be applied to both databases and database management systems (DBMS) themselves. The relational fidelity of database programs can be compared using Codd's 1. Codd's seminal paper on the relational model, the number of rules has been expanded to 3. DBMS products conform to the relational model. When compared with other database management programs, Microsoft Access fares quite well in terms of relational fidelity. Finally, the relational view permits a clearer evaluation. 7 Agenda The need for database management systems Brief overview of the relational model Querying relational database directly and through views. Still, it has a long way to go before it meets all twelve rules completely. Fortunately, you don't have to wait until Microsoft Access is perfect in a relational sense before you can benefit from the relational model. The relational model can also be applied to the design of databases, which is the subject of the remainder of this article. Relational Database Design. When designing a database, you have to make decisions regarding how best to take some system in the real world and model it in a database. This consists of deciding which tables to create, what columns they will contain, as well as the relationships between the tables. While it would be nice if this process was totally intuitive and obvious, or even better automated, this is simply not the case. A well- designed database takes time and effort to conceive, build and refine. The benefits of a database that has been designed according to the relational model are numerous. Some of them are: Data entry, updates and deletions will be efficient. Tutorial on Relational Database Design Introduction Relational database was proposed by Edgar Codd (of IBM Research) around 1969. It has since become the dominant. How a relational database works. Learn about fields, records and tables and how they form relational databases. Data Modeling and Relational Database Design.Volume 1 A relational database management system (RDBMS) is a database management system (DBMS) that is based on the relational model as invented by E. Data retrieval, summarization and reporting will also be efficient. Since the database follows a well- formulated model, it behaves predictably. Since much of the information is stored in the database rather than in the application, the database is somewhat self- documenting. Changes to the database schema are easy to make. The goal of this article is to explain the basic principles behind relational database design and demonstrate how to apply these principles when designing a database using Microsoft Access. This article is by no means comprehensive and certainly not definitive. Many books have been written on database design theory; in fact, many careers have been devoted to its study. Instead, this article is meant as an informal introduction to database design theory for the database developer. Note: While the examples in this article are centered around Microsoft Access databases, the discussion also applies to database development using the Microsoft Visual Basic. Each table should represent only one thing. These things (or entities) can be real- world objects or events. For example, a real- world object might be a customer, an inventory item, or an invoice. Examples of events include patient visits, orders, and telephone calls. Tables are made up of rows and columns. The relational model dictates that each row in a table be unique. If you allow duplicate rows in a table, then there's no way to uniquely address a given row via programming. This creates all sorts of ambiguities and problems that are best avoided. You guarantee uniqueness for a table by designating a primary key—a column that contains unique values for a table. Each table can have only one primary key, even though several columns or combination of columns may contain unique values. All columns (or combination of columns) in a table with unique values are referred to as candidate keys, from which the primary key must be drawn. All other candidate key columns are referred to as alternate keys. Keys can be simple or composite. A simple key is a key made up of one column, whereas a composite key is made up of two or more columns. The decision as to which candidate key is the primary one rests in your hands—there's no absolute rule as to which candidate key is best. Fabian Pascal, in his book SQL and Relational Basics, notes that the decision should be based upon the principles of minimality (choose the fewest columns necessary), stability (choose a key that seldom changes), and simplicity/familiarity (choose a key that is both simple and familiar to users). Let's illustrate with an example. Say that a company has a table of customers called tbl. Customer, which looks like the table shown in Figure 1. Figure 1. The best choice for primary key for tbl. Customer would be Customer. Id. Candidate keys for tbl. Customer might include Customer. Id, (Last. Name + First. Name), Phone#, (Address, City, State), and (Address + Zip. Code). Following Pascal's guidelines, you would rule out the last three candidates because addresses and phone numbers can change fairly frequently. The choice among Customer. Id and the name composite key is less obvious and would involve tradeoffs. How likely would a customer's name change (e. Will misspelling of names be common? How likely will two customers have the same first and last names? How familiar will Customer. Id be to users? There's no right answer, but most developers favor numeric primary keys because names do sometimes change and because searches and sorts of numeric columns are more efficient than of text columns in Microsoft Access (and most other databases). Counter columns in Microsoft Access make good primary keys, especially when you're having trouble coming up with good candidate keys, and no existing arbitrary identification number is already in place. Don't use a counter column if you'll sometimes need to renumber the values—you won't be able to—or if you require an alphanumeric code—Microsoft Access supports only long integer counter values. Also, counter columns only make sense for tables on the one side of a one- to- many relationship (see the discussion of relationships in the next section). Note: In many situations, it is best to use some sort of arbitrary static whole number (e. ID, order ID, a counter column, etc.) as a primary key rather than a descriptive text column. This avoids the problem of misspellings and name changes. Also, don't use real numbers as primary keys since they are inexact. Foreign Keys and Domains. Although primary keys are a function of individual tables, if you created databases that consisted of only independent and unrelated tables, you'd have little need for them. Primary keys become essential, however, when you start to create relationships that join together multiple tables in a database. A foreign key is a column in a table used to reference a primary key in another table. Continuing the example presented in the last section, let's say that you choose Customer. Id as the primary key for tbl. Customer. Now define a second table, tbl. Order, as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2. Customer. Id is a foreign key in tbl. Order which can be used to reference a customer stored in the tbl. Customer table. Customer. Id is considered a foreign key in tbl. Order since it can be used to refer to given customer (i. Customer table). It is important that both foreign keys and the primary keys that are used to reference share a common meaning and draw their values from the same domain. Domains are simply pools of values from which columns are drawn. For example, Customer. Id is of the domain of valid customer ID #'s, which in this case might be Long Integers ranging between 1 and 5. Similarly, a column named Sex might be based on a one- letter domain equaling 'M' or 'F'. Domains can be thought of as user- defined column types whose definition implies certain rules that the columns must follow and certain operations that you can perform on those columns. Microsoft Access supports domains only partially. For example, Microsoft Access will not let you create a relationship between two tables using columns that do not share the same datatype (e. On the other hand, Microsoft Access will not prevent you from joining the Integer column Employee. Age from one table to the Integer column Years. Ticket Fines and Penalties in New Jersey.
